IRS Direct File is gone, but you can still file both federal and Oregon returns for free.
| Option | Who it's for |
|---|---|
| IRS Free File guided software | Adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less. Some offers include a free state return. |
| IRS Free File Fillable Forms | Any income. Federal forms only, with little guidance. |
| Direct File Oregon | Most full-year Oregon residents. Files your Oregon return directly with the state. You type in your federal numbers yourself. |
| 1040NOW | Oregon residents with federal AGI of $32,000 or less, federal and state. |
| Program | Who it's for |
|---|---|
| VITA | Generally about $70,244 or less, people with disabilities, and limited English speakers. Sites may set their own limits. |
| AARP Tax-Aide | Anyone, with a focus on people 50 and older with low to moderate income. |
| MFS-CASH Oregon | Virtual and in-person help, mainly in the Portland area. |
| GetYourRefund / MyFreeTaxes | File online yourself or with an IRS-certified volunteer. |
The IRS's own free filing program isn't available anymore and isn't coming back for the 2026 filing season. Direct File Oregon still works, but you now enter your federal return information by hand.
Washington has no income tax return, but its Working Families Tax Credit is a separate, free application at workingfamiliescredit.wa.gov, on paper, or through participating tax software. You'll need your federal return filed first.
General information, not tax or legal advice. Rules change; the agency has the final say on your case.
