Common questions
How the marketplace tax credit is figured
Your income is compared to the poverty guideline for your household size. For 2026 coverage, the marketplace uses the 2025 guidelines.
That percentage sets how much of your income you're expected to pay toward the benchmark (second-lowest-cost silver) plan: from 2.10% to 9.96% in 2026.
Your tax credit is the benchmark price minus that expected amount. You can use it on any metal-level plan.
Above 400% of the poverty level, there's no credit in 2026.
What if my income changes during the year?
Report changes to the marketplace. The credit is settled on your tax return; for 2026, most people have to pay back the full amount of any extra credit they got.
Why does OHP or Apple Health use a different income?
Medicaid programs look at your current monthly income, while the marketplace looks at your expected income for the whole year. This page uses one-twelfth of the yearly figure for the monthly check; your actual monthly income is what counts.
What about people 65 and older?
Most people 65 and older get Medicare instead. See the Medicare Savings Programs in the benefits calculator for help with Medicare costs.
