When the increase starts

SSIThe increase starts with the payment for January 2027. January 1 is a holiday, so that payment arrives Thursday, December 31, 2026.
Social Security and SSDIThe increase starts with your January 2027 payment, paid on your usual day. Find your payment day.

Medicare Part B premiums usually change in January too, and they're taken out of Social Security checks, so your actual deposit may rise by less than the COLA.

3.6%. SSA announced it on October 14, 2026, based on inflation from July through September. It starts with January 2027 payments.

How is the COLA figured?

By law, it equals the increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) from the third quarter of last year to the third quarter of this year.

Does the COLA apply to SSI?

Yes. The SSI maximum goes up by the same percentage, rounded by SSA. Your SSI check also depends on your other income.
