Common questions

What is a tax bracket?

The U.S. taxes income in layers. The first slice of taxable income is taxed at 10%, the next slice at 12%, and so on. Your bracket is the rate on your last dollar, not on all of your income.

Will a raise push me into a higher bracket and lower my pay?

No. Only the dollars above the bracket line are taxed at the higher rate. A raise always leaves you with more money after federal income tax.

What is the standard deduction for 2026?

$16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly and $24,150 head of household. People 65 or older get an extra $2,050 (single) or $1,650 each (married).

What is my effective tax rate?

Your total federal income tax divided by your total income. It is almost always much lower than your bracket.

What are the 2026 capital gains rates?

Long-term gains are taxed at 0% for taxable income up to $49,450 single, $98,900 married jointly or $66,200 head of household; 15% up to $545,500, $613,700 or $579,600; and 20% above that. This calculator treats all income as regular income.
